Secrets of a Good Poker Face (Poker Face Tips!)
Everybody needs a pokeri face now and then. Playing cards – or sometimes even dealing with desk clerks – demands that you keep greed, jealousy, pride, and anger in check. You need to leave your emotions unchecked by bad news. You don’t want to tip off other players.
Even the slightest bit of irritation can cause facial expressions to change. It’s VERY DIFFICULT to keep your face completely devoid of emotion. But it’s important to keep those feelings under tight control. You also don’t want your emotions to have a potentially negative effect on how you play. The poker face is an art form that takes practice, but once you master it, you’ll notice a big improvement in your game.
Of course, if you play your poker on the internet (nettipokeri) then you don’t really need to worry about your facial expressions!
Rule 1: Each hand is a battle, but your goal is to win the war. Do not let losses and setbacks drag you down. Good players will attempt to crush your spirits subtedly if they notice your in a downward spiral (ie., losing a couple hands in a row). Visualization is the best technique to use. When the negative emotions starting to build, simply imagine something peaceful – like you’re walking through a forest or sleeping on a giant puffy cotton ball. It sounds corny, but it can work. You’ll need to practice it. If you have a day job or a spouse, you’ll have ample opportunities to practice. If you’re in a meeting at work, practice. When your spouse is complaining about something, practice more. It’ll take a few tries, but overcoming the negative aspect is easier with a visual aid.
Rule 2: You need to be equally calm when things are good! If you’re dealt a royal flush, you don’t want to show it. You want to keep people in the game and build up the pot. If the other players sense that you’ve got a winner, they’ll start folding. The key to a good poker face is that it lacks any interpretable expression. Your opponents are watching you for the smallest indicators that could reveal what kind of hand you’re holding. A good start is to wear a hat and/or a pair of dark sunglasses. Your eyes can reveal a lot. If you avoid eye contact, you can also reveal a lot. Good poker players will watch you carefully, so if you can’t keep your eyes in check: wear sunglasses to alleviate the problem.
